Fallow deer, people and the pope

Fallow deer in Waterleidingduinen are dying in great numbers. According to Vereniging Het Edelhert [Red Deer Association], the population is too large and there is too little food available. Jan Paulides of the Association is very concerned about the future.

"Perhaps the misery experienced at present is only a temporary problem and the fallow deer will find food again. But what then? The two thousand fallow deer of today will soon become four thousand and then six thousand or even eight thousand deer."
Gynaecologist Douwe Verkuyl draws a parallel with humanity. "What is happening to the fallow deer in the Waterleidingduinen, will also happen to people without contraception." He hopes that the new pope understands that.Richard Dawkins also has a strong opinion on this issue: 'Without massive emigration to areas with more space, uncontrolled birth rates will certainly lead to a huge increase in mortality rates. It is hard to believe that this simple truth is not understood by leaders who forbid their followers from using effective contraceptives. They speak out in favour of natural methods of population control, and a natural method is exactly what they will get in the form of starvation.
